“The Lucky Man” part of the Culver City Disability Film Series

I am a member of the Culver City Disability Advisory Committee and we have been working on a Disability Film Series (the first to premier on July 29 at 4:00 p.m. at the Culver City Senior Center).  Similar film series’ are currently done in many other  major cities and we think it would be appropriate to have it start in California in Culver City since we are “The Heart of Screenland”.  The film, The Lucky Man, is an Emmy-nominated documentary made by and about a Culver City Lindberg Park resident and his battle and death from ALS, commonly known in the US as Lou Gehrig’s Disease.

To Frack Or Not To Frack

The Culver City Council on Monday July 2, 2012 7:00pm, will consider a fracking resolution, i.e. whether to allow hydraulic fracturing oil drilling in and under Culver City.  The Citizens Coalition for a Safe Community (and others) urge you to attend Monday night’s Culver City Council meeting, and have provided a fact sheet to help formulate questions.

Air Quality Monitoring Study

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors recently approved the contract for the Air Quality Monitoring Study that is part of the Baldwin Hills Oil Fields CSD.  This was one of the big items that we pushed to have included in the CSD, to get a scientific reading of what’s actually being emitted into the air by PXP Oil’s operations.  However, it is not a substitute for calling the AQMD at 1-800-CUT-SMOG when you detect an odor that you think may be coming from the oil fields.

UPDATE: On the agenda of the next CAP meeting (June 28, 2012 at Ken Hahn State Park Park Recreation Center) is an update of this air quality monitoring study.

2ND UPDATE: The Department of Regional Planning has released the proposal by Sonoma Technologies.

Community Health Survey Results

The County ordinance that adopted the CAP (Community Advisory Panel) also included a provision requiring the County to do a health survey of the area surrounding the oil field.  Our CCNA president Khin Khin Gyi was a member of the subcommittee that worked with the County’s Public Health department on developing the survey.

The survey has finally been completed, and will be the principal agenda item for the July 26 CAP meeting.

Parts of Culver Crest in Fire Hazard Zone

The Culver City Fire Marshal has informed certain Culver Crest homeowners that their properties are to be designated as being in a Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone (VHFHSZ).   The Fire Marshall is working on developing a local ordinance to present to City Council for adoption next month.

Portion of Culver Crest (in red) to be designated Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone (VHFHSZ)

Briefly, homes designated as such will:

  • Need to meet state brush clearance requirements
  • Need to comply with specific CA “Ignition Resistant Construction” building codes
  • Require their owners to disclose the VHFHSZ status when transferring ownership.

If you have any questions, please contact the Culver City Fire Prevention Bureau at 310/253-5925.

Real Estate Listings

Posted by Antoine Durr on June 13, 2012
Posted in: Website. Leave a comment

We are introducing a new feature on the CCNA website: real estate postings.  These postings are intended to be the digital age equivalent of the one-sheet that you typically find in the realtor boxes on properties that are up for sale.   So rather than pulling over and grabbing a sheet of paper (assuming there are any left and they’re not all soaking wet), just click on the image in the post.

Here’s how we intend to add these real estate postings.  When we hear about a new listing on the Crest (we subscribe to a realtor search-engine query that sends us information whenever there are new listings) we go grab the main picture from the MLS site, create a post here on this website, and link the picture to the original MLS (Multiple Listing Service) page.  That’s it!

We would like to clarify what these real estate postings on culvercrestna.org will not be:

  • An exhaustive list:  Each posting is individually done by hand.  The set of posts on culvercrestna.org are not the equivalent of a computer-generated search.  If you’re using culvercrestna.org as your primary search tool for property availability in Culver Crest, may we suggest you’re in the wrong place!
  • An indication of the property’s availability:  When we find out that a place has come up for sale, we add a post.  But once it’s on our website (which is basically a blog), there it remains, even if it has sold or been taken off the market.  The only thing you can infer from a posting is that the property was put on the market once upon a time.
  • Guaranteed to be timely: we may be out of town when your place goes on the market, so there is no guarantee that we’ll add it.  But you’re more than welcome to let us know if we missed it, or to give us a heads-up that we should keep an eye out for it.
  • An endorsement of any particular realtor: The MLS listing usually contains the selling realtor’s contact information.  Should you desire to purchase, we highly recommend you enlist the services of a qualified realtor who is acting on your behalf as buyer.  We have several really good ones in the Crest.

Finally, a large part of the reason for adding real estate posts on culvercrestna.org is to add pictures and keep the website fresh.  Also, over time, we expect to have pictures of many of the houses here on the Crest.  A visitor looking for more information about what our neighborhood looks like might see all the historical for-sale postings and get a better sense of the character of our neighborhood.

What is Fracking?

Posted by Antoine Durr on June 12, 2012
Posted in: FAQ. Tagged: fracking. Leave a comment

Fracking is short for Hydraulic Fracturing, an oil extraction technique that is used to increase the yield of oil wells by pumping high pressure water+chemicals down into the well to create cracks (fissures/fractures) in the shale, through which gas can then be extracted.  The technique’s controversy arises from its use of toxic chemicals that may leach into the groundwater, and the resultant fissures that may cause earthquakes.
