Hazardous Waste Roundup June 24, 2017

The annual Hazardous Waste Roundup is happening again on June 24, 2017, 9am-3pm, in the parking lot in front of the Wende Museum in Culver City.

If you haven’t attended one of these before, it’s awesome to have one of these in Culver City.  But it’s also a bit surreal: from the paddle tennis court parking lot entrance by Elenda St. you enter the hazmat corridor that’s set up between there and the end of the Wende Museum.  You’re surrounded by folks in hazmat suits and asked to not leave your vehicle.  You pop open your trunk, thinking that they’ll somehow pluck E.T. from the depths of your spare tire.  Instead each station grabs the appropriate items, e.g. paints, batteries, e-waste, etc.  and then at the end you fill out a survey.  5 minutes later you’re out of there thinking about what else you could have brought with you from your garage!

The flyer has all the details for your next trip.

From Golden State Water’s Linda Cunningham:

Our trial Shutdown last week went as planned and we are now preparing for the actual Shutdown (Water Interruption) that will take place on May 11, 2017 from 9-4 pm.   This Shutdown will tie in the new main in Cranks Road and Ranch Road and Ranch at Youngworth.   The will be crews working in these locations and along the new water main area.

As part of the continuing effort to replace existing water mains with approximately 6,500 feet of new PVC pipe, Golden State Water will be performing a temporary service interruption in the water distribution system this Thursday, May 11 from 9am – 4 pm.

PLEASE NOTE: This is a new service interruption, following the previous service interruption on Friday, May 5.  See Full Flyer here: Culver City CSA Scheduled Shutdown May 11 2017

Affected Culver Crest residents should receive a flyer on their doors shortly. During this shutdown, residents “may be temporarily inconvenienced by the presence of crews, construction equipment, road closures, or increased traffic.” Golden State is advising residents may also want to allow extra time for their commute.

According to Golden State Water, impacted streets will include:

  • Ranch Road from 10713 Ranch Road to Cranks Road
  • Cranks Road from Ranch Road to Hill Street
  • Youngworth from Ranch Road to Flaxton
  • Flaxton from Youngworth to Drakewood
  • Drakewood from Flaxton to Ranch Road
  • Lugo Way from Ranch Road to end of cul-de-sac

Golden State Water appreciates the community’s patience and has generously offered to provide bottled water during this shutdown. If you would like bottled water, please contact their local Customer Service office at (310) 838-1324, and Golden State crews will be happy to deliver it to your home.

Any additional questions regarding the project can be directed to Golden State Water’s 800 number: (800) 999-4033 or Project Coordinator Linda Cunningham at (562) 907-9200 x408.

Coyotes on the Crest

Urban-Coyotes

Coyotes haven’t been spotted on the Crest with quite the same frequency of last year, but their ongoing presence here and indeed in many areas of Southern California is an ongoing fact of life.

Even urban coyotes tend to maintain a healthy fear of man and will try to keep a safe distance. However, habituated coyotes – coyotes that have lost that fear of humans through exposure, feeding, availability of easy prey such as outdoor cats and untended small dogs – require special treatment. This treatment is called “hazing” – making loud noises at the animal, chasing after it (so long as you do not have a small pet or child with you at the time), and throwing rocks in the animal’s general direction.

Below are some useful references to help Culver Crest residents keep their animals, children, and themselves safe from potential conflicts with these very intelligent but potentially aggressive predators.

The “Keep Me Wild” pamphlet from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife offers details on how to “coyote-proof” items like trash and offers general information on coyote-human interaction aimed at reducing potential conflicts. It outlines the dangers of feeding coyotes, which is the most powerful way to habituate them and set up future conflict with humans.

COYOTES – PAMPHLET – 2016 – KEEP ME WILD – CALIF DEPT OF FISH AND WILDLIFE – USED 7-19-16

The Coyote Behavior, Classification, and Recommended Response document helps individuals gauge how potentially aggressive or habituated an encountered coyote is and recommends how to handle a range of situations. Coyotes that fall into the orange and red sections of this document should be approached with extreme caution to minimize the risk of conflict. If you are with a small child or animal, it is always a good idea to get them to a safe place before attempting to haze the coyote in any way. And never turn your back on and run away from a coyote – this may trigger a “prey response” that will instigate even more aggressive behavior and possibly even an attack.

The last document is a summary of recent coyote sightings and encounters on the Crest.

What is NextGEN?

Posted by Antoine Durr on April 27, 2017
Posted in: FAQ. Tagged: FAA, LAX, NextGEN, noise. Leave a comment

NextGEN is the Federal Aviation Administration’s program to upgrade the nation’s air traffic control systems from the traditional radar+radio communication to modern satellite based GPS with automated data exchange.  The net effect is that airplanes will be able to take more direct routes to their destinations and have less need to stack up, reducing effects like the Downey Rush.  Because airplanes can now take more direct routes to LAX than via Downey, areas around LAX will see an increase of low altitude flights.

Mail Delivery Issues

Many neighbors have reported having had issues with mail delivery, e.g. getting a neighbor’s mail, finding your mail at the neighbors, etc.   In effort to collect more data, we have set up a Google form to log mail delivery incidents.  You can get to this form and the corresponding tracking sheet via the links below, or from the corresponding issues/subcommittees page.

  • Here is the FORM to log your issues
  • Here is the TRACKING SHEET that lists all the responses

Once we have a critical mass of issues reported we will take the list and communicate with the Culver City Postmaster.
